Bornholm

Bongsu and I went to the island of Bornholm, in the Baltic. The Baltic Sea is called Østersøen in Danish, which means East Sea - but Øster also means Oyster, and Bornholm is referred to as the Pearl. As to being beautiful and rare, I agree!

We rented bicycles in Rønne, the main town, and biked all the way around and across the island for three days, with two nights in different hotels. The weather and the views were stunning everwhere we went - pine forets, a ruined castle on a cliff by the sea, placid beaches, endless fields of corn and wheat, rocky shores, and even some very decent hills.

Bornholm is famous for its round churches, which were really nice to see, and for its smoked fish - we enjoyed both herring and mackerel, although neither of us was quite able to get into the raw egg yolk that is traditionally eaten with it. We were, however, into the ripe, wild blackberries that grew all over the place, which we collected into empty water bottles.

It was a fantastic trip. I hope I'll get a chance to go again someday!
